The first time Maeve cheated death, she was five years old. She had been playing in her front yard when a neighbor invited her into his home for a snack. The girl didn’t think twice about accepting the offer and still had the scar on her finger as a reminder to not be so trusting of sweet words.

The second time Maeve cheated death, she wasn’t even aware it had happened. Maybe it was because she was too used to the crushing anxiety and dread that she constantly lived with, but she didn’t notice the obvious warning signs that came from all directions telling her to run. It had been her constant shadow, after all.
